I WAS ABOARD MIDWAY 1954-55, AD3, V2 DIV. YOUR HISTORY DOES NOT INDICATE THE EVACUATION OF THE TACHEN ISLANDS, FORMOSA STRAIT , FEB. 55. THE SEVENTH FLEET WAS AWARDED THE CHINA SERVICE MEDAL FOR THAT ONE. WHAT A THRILL IT WAS TO BE OUT THERE WITH SOME OF THE HERO SHIPS OF WW2.THEY ARE ALL GONE NOW BUT LOOKING FORWARD TO BEING ON POINT LOME THE DAY THAT OUR MIDWAY IS RETURNED TO SAN DIEGO. ( THIS MAY BE A RERUN OF A SIMILAR E MAIL I SENT SOME TIME AGO. THE OLD MEMORY FAILS FROM TIME TO TIME ) THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS AT KEEPING THE HISTORY OF OUR GREAT SHIP ALIVE.

The history has been updated to include the following:

After joining the Seventh Fleet off Taiwan in February 1955, MIDWAY became the flagship of COMCARDIV Three, operating off the Philippine Islands and Japan. Shortly after her arrival in the area, MIDWAY participated in the evacuation of 24,000 military and civilian personnel of the Republic of China from the Tachen Islands, off the China coast. She remained in the area patrolling the Taiwan Straits and the South China Sea until June. For this operation, MIDWAY was awarded the China Service Medal.

I agree, The Midway was and always will be the finest and best Aircraft carrier in the UNITED STATES NAVY. MIDWAY, the great lady that she was, was doing more with less, long before the downsizing. I feel sorry for all those who did not get a chance to serve aboard her to learn what the MIDWAY MAGIC was all about. OUTSTANDING WEB PAGE AND TRIBUTE TO A GREAT SHIP AND HER CREW.

I too was stationed on the great carrier USS Midway. I was stationed on there from recommissioning in Sept.1957 thru July 1959. A mighty ship was "SHE". I get homesick for her every time I go by her in Bremerton.
