Vic Pinzon and myself were operating the ship's closed circuit television station during Operation Frequent Wind in April 1975. Keeping the crew's morale high at that time was more important than ever as long hours and endless days at sea were the norm. I'm very pleased to see my ship come to San Diego this fall for good as a waterfront museum!

Served aboard 1962-1965; OI Div.; RD3: I know about the loss of elevator #3 during the 63/64 cruise; It wasn't necessarily the fault of heavy seas as much as the fault of the Captain that ordered too much rudder during break-away from the unrep, for the existing sea conditions and the ship's speed. Add to that the fact that we were still moving materials off the elevator - so it was in the lowered position. The turn to Port resulted in the ship listing into two large waves - the first one shook the elevator loose and the second knocked it off the ship. No one was on the elevator when it was lost. We continued operations for the balance of the cruise without the elevator and continued to be the best in the fleet when competing against the sister carrier, USS Ranger (I believe), during launch and recovery operations.
