Greetings! I served onboard the Midway from 88 to 91 and stayed on when she left Yokosuka for the last time until she reached San Diego. It was the hardest time I spent in the Navy but it was by far the best. Thanks for taking the time and effort to create such a great site dedicated to such a fine ship. Cymru am byth! While you were in Cubi you should have taken a picture of VRC-50's Herk instead of VMGR-152's, we were "station dito"!!

Reply:

Yes, I know VRC-50 was "Station Dito" in Cubi. On the day I took those pictures, VRC-50's Herky Bird wasn't around. I was taking photos of the hot pits area and the Marine Herk was the only one present. If you go to the "NAF Atsugi Air Shows Gallery", there are a few photos of VRC-50's Herk at the bottom of the "Miscellaneous U.S. Aircraft" page."

I was a DT3 on board Midway from 1979-1981. This was my first and most memorable command. We were busy with 3 Indian Ocean cruises plus a collision. The # 41 has stuck with me since high school and continues to be part of my life today. I retired in 1998 as a Seabee but will always remember the "Midway Magic". Can't wait to see her in San Diego!

Great Web Site. It brought back many wonderful memories. I served onboard Midway from 84 to 88 as an SPS-48 Radar technician. I totally agree it was and still is the greatest Carrier ever. As Bob Hope always said, "Thanks For The Memories".

I was aboard that great ship from August 1946 to March 1948. I am sure that there are not many crew members still living that served on the MIDWAY during the early days her service. I am glad to know she is to be given a place in history by becoming a museum in San Diego later this year. It will be great to walk her decks once more.

Great site, fond memories of Midway. While stationed onboard USS Cochrane, we found that we could always figure out where the Midway was by looking for the black smoke on the horizon. Got my first arrested landing aboard the COD landing on Midway in 1987.

I had the pleasure to serve on this fine Carrier in "74-75" Far East Cruise. I'm glad to see she will be Honored as She should be after serving this country in several conflicts and acts of aggression against the U.S. and its protectorates and defending our positions successfully, every time. It is an honor to have been there and done that in my life time.

I found your site quite accidentally, but was unable to browse through it. I could only access the first page. All the other pages were unavailable. I reported aboard MIDWAY August 1990 as ship's company. I was aboard for
DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM, FIREY VIGIL (Mt Pinatubo), and crossdecked over to INDEPENDENCE at Pearl Harbor. There was no comparison between the two ships. MIDWAY was the finest command I have served aboard. On MIDWAY I worked in CVIC, and also did the news reports on the ship's TV. On Indy I worked mostly in the MAA shack as a shift supervisor. I often meet fellow MIDWAY sailors. What is your name, and where did you work at 136? I'm glad you put the site together. Last year I went out to SUBASE Banger, WA to be reenlisted by my old CV-41 shipmate, who is now a LT. Afterwards we went over to Bremerton to see MIDWAY tied up alongside Indy at the mothball pier. I was glad to hear she was getting ready to get underway again for the trip to San Diego as a museum.

Was attached to the Midway in 1985 as part of VA-56. When I first came aboard in the middle of the I.O. I said to myself, "what were you thinking coming to this ship?." It really only took a couple of days for the "Magic" to start working it's way into my bones. After a few weeks, I could not remember what life was like on one of them "super carriers." I took VA-56 back to Lemoore for a disappointing disestablishment. I did however find solace in this by transitioning to the F/A-18A as part of VFA-195 and soon was back aboard that proud lady once again. Unfortunately, my tour ended and I headed back to the CONUS and made 3 more deployments during the rest of my career. No ship ever held a candle to the USS Midway in my eyes and many others I'm sure. Being a good sailor I made the most of the rest of my career but forever in my heart the greatest ship the U.S. Navy ever had was the USS Midway, what greater honor I could not imagine than just to have served on her once; but to serve on her twice....what a blessing.

A great site, was onboard from 3/71 to 9/73 with VF-151, mostly TAD to S-6 Div (Aviation Skivie Stacker..AK3), didn't realize we spent all that time on the line! And now the "talking heads" think six months at sea is a long time, but then I'm sure the WWII and Korea Vets will think it's no big deal to spend 11 months at sea. Anyway, am hoping to find Dave Bishop out there somewhere.

Does anyone remember when Midway took on some refugees in 84 or 85? We took on about 40 people or so and then had the USS Knox blow their old, dying boat out of the water. I remember that moment when we were in the hanger bay on the port side sponson and the first of the boat people were brought on by the deck apes. A whole bunch of us were just clapping and yelling and crying. It was such a great moment to be a part of. I was so proud to be on the crew that saved these people's lives. We took them into some port a few days later after we had fed, clothed, and nursed them back to health. If you were there, write me an e-mail and let me know. I do remember that we were screwed out of getting the Humanitarian Award (with ribbon) for not being the first ship to make contact. Our planes spotted them and we used our boats to get them, but we took them to the Knox first, because as a carrier, we couldn't just slide on over to them. So they got the ribbon. But We have the memories.

What's the story on the SDACM? Is she going to be there this year? or Next?

I served on Midway from 1983 to 1985. I experienced first hand "Midway Magic". I was OSSA/OS3 while on board, made several IO cruises spent 111 days on "Gonzo" Station. I reflect on those days as the best of my life! Shell back initiation, liberty ports...Subic Bay. OI Division Gang. I will remember my buds forever! Press on! Midway Magic!

Reported aboard while Midway was in drydock at Hunters Point. Served from 1970-72.

Captain Eugene J. Carroll commanding at that time. Served in CR division under Lt. Cdr Thunderburk and Lt. Meeks.

As I remember it, we relieved U.S.S. Ranger in May of 1971 but the years have dimmed the memory.

On duty evening Midway processed it's 10,000 radio message on Yankee Station. Have a picture of the cake presented to CR division to commemorate the achievement.

Proud member of Gulf of Tonkin Yacht Club. Still retain many souvenirs of that time of my life.

Remember vividly the onboard visit by CNO Adm. Zumwalt.

Years later, came across a fellow worker who had been aboard U.S.S. Yorktown during the Battle of Midway 1942. I presented him a shoulder patch I had from Midway and his teary expression spoke volumes.

Wonderful website. Brought back many great times on a great lady. Thanks for the memories.
