I went to your website and
really enjoyed reviewing it. I had a cousin stationed on the ship and have
lost contact with him. I have tried for along time to trace him down. He
was on it in 1959 for a few years. I try to look at everything that is of
the ship. I don't know when you were on it, but his name is Bobby Bartley
and he was a friend of Joseph T. Peters. If you have any info, I would
really appreciate it. Keep up the good work you have a great website for
the ship. Thank you,
S haron

Greetings:
In January of 1970 I came aboard Midway at Hunters Point Shipyard. I was
18 and a raw E2/FA. I was assigned to 1 Charlie fireroom. I only spent 4
months aboard her, but I am grateful for the experience(s). Fast-forward
to 1980...I enlisted in the reserves and became an SW2 with the 17th
Seabee Battalion out of Port Hueneme, CA. 1990: retired from the Navy, but
my heart still longs for the way-too-short time I served on the Midway.
Today, my plank owner's cert hangs in my classroom, for my students to
admire. When Midway comes to San Diego, I'm looking forward to showing my
13 year old daughter where daddy worked (and played).
I have an interesting offer for anyone: I have a good copy of Midway's
Commissioning Program from 31 Jan. 70. It gives ship's specs, former CO's,
bios on Capt. Carroll and his XO. There are pictures of Dept. Heads, a
list of ship's company by every plank owner's home state, and other info.
I'm willing to part with it--if the receiver will make a donation to the
"Midway Magic" Museum fund in BOTH of our names. That way, it's a
win-win-win situation. Please contact me if you're interested. |

I received an email from "RB" asking about the
Cunningham/Driscoll shootdowns in Vietnam. I tried to reply to him several
times, but my letters are returned as undeliverable each time. Hopefully
he will see my reply here:
Original Message:
From: "RB"
Subject: kills not listed?
Shouldn't Randy Cunningham and Bill Driscoll be listed in the VF 151
kills?
Didn't see 'em. Could have overlooked 'em.
My Reply:
Sorry, they weren't flying off the Midway when they made their kills. The
list on my site shows only those kills made by pilots flying from the
Midway. I have included some information below which you may find
interesting:
For all engagements:
Pilot: Randall H. Cunningham, LT
RIO: William P. Driscoll, LTJG
Squadron: VF-96
Carrier: USS Constellation, CVA-64
Aircraft: F-4J Phantom II
Weapon: AIM-9 Sidewinder
Engagement 1: 19 JAN 72 - One MiG-21
Engagement 2: 08 MAY 72 - One MiG-17
Engagement 3: 10 MAY 72 - Three MiG-17s

Greetings
Dear Sir
My uncle served aboard the USS MIDWAY. He was assigned just before the
commissioning and was aboard until July of 1946. His name was Robert T.
Gilbreath (S1c). Prior to being aboard the Midway, he was at USNATB Fort
Pierce, Florida for 4 months of training. Is it at all possible you could
tell me more as that is all I know? What was he doing on board? I know
Fort Pierce was the USN PhibTraBase and that is where the Scouts and
Raiders were trained. I know that is what he was sent there for. Also I
believe my aunt may still have photos he took while on the Midway. I will
have to ask her.
Thank you for any comments

Ahoy Midway,
In the Chicago Sun Times there was an obituary for a USN Chaplain, named
Fr. Devin Griffin who was aboard the Midway, where would I send this
information?

Subject: MARDET ON USS MIDWAY
So,
You were one of those Marines putting me on the deck when the siren went
off while I was waiting in line at the ship's store, waiting to buy my
issue of Playboy (well, they can't sell that anymore on Navy ships). Ree
Reee REEEEEE, then a bunch of Marines coming up from the berthing like the
Old Faithful geiser, shouting, "Gang Way, hit the deck you mutha-f---as......"
Never forget that part, and Marines banging on the one-way mirror glass
sentry stations near the aft mess decks ( we all knew why). "Keep moving,
asshole!!!".
Ran a drill once with your Captain and the ship's security officer in
league together. I was a mess cook at the time and was enlisted to carry a
cardboard box with some bread in it, onto the ship. The fun part was,
below the bread were two red sticks (dynamite) and an alarm clock, to
simulate a bomb. Managed to smuggle it past the idiots at the forward
officer's brow on elevavator #1 with no problem, since I told them it was
a special delivery for the Captain. I tried the same gig on the after
enlisted brow about 10 minutes later, and the watch hit the "911, Oh crap
we need Marines" duress button and out you guys came. I have never been so
overwhelmed (at that point in my life) as that moment, and just before you
guys kicked my ass, the Marine CO and the Navy Security Officer, stepped
in and saved my ass from you guys. I was like an E-2 at the time and I'll
never forget that friggin response fire team bearing down on my young arse.
Total shock and awe = control in an otherwise permissive environment.
I don't know your name but we shared many of the same waves based on the
dates you were on board Midway. Best and warmest regards from Guam,
(Now) Senior Chief Jay Sidas, Guam, USA, then Airman Apprentice E-2

Subject: REMEMBER ME?
Art (Fred),
Gosh, I know your name but can't quite picture your face......but I
remember you! I was Airman (maybe ABF3 by 1989) Jay Sidas. I started out
in Sept of 87 as V4 yeoman because Bos'n Black found out I could type,
then I went mess cookin', then was assigned to BDC. I lasted exactly 2
hours there when ABFC Mulcahey) fired me to the flight deck with ABF2
Merwin and ABF1 Draskow. I was flight deck crewmember then leader, then
worked QC for quite a while, then failed miserably at repair when ABF2
Pistole was there (I wasn't a fix-it guy at all, I'm still bad at it, but
I could scratch the hell out of a pad-eye with a grounding wire for
continuity!). I ended up as the training po working in the V4 office down
on the after hangarbay, stbd side by the LOX plant, with ABFCS "Sporty"
Morty (Morton), Bos'n Black and the like until I transfered in Aug of
1990.
Came across your posting and thought I would drop a line to see if you
remember me. I'm on Guam now and am heading back to the middle east in 2
weeks from now, for my next duty station assignment. I stuck with it,
cross-rated to Master-at-Arms (go figure) and am now a Senior Chief (go
figure, again).
All the best to you and yours in Ca. Best wishes and warmest regards,
shipmate.
Jay

I served
onboard Midway from 1982 - 1984. It truly was great experience. I was a YN
working in the Captain's Office. We truly were the "Tip of the Sword". You
haven't truly served unless you served onboard the MIDWAY. I look forward
to making a trip to San Diego to see her again in all of her glory. I
would love to hear from anyone who served onboard between 1982-1984. The
trips to Hong Kong and the Philippines were truly unforgettable. |

Midway was my
first ship after boot camp as a non-des Airman Recruit. Was assigned to
Air/V4 1987-1990. I have never been assigned to a ship or shore command
with the same sense of team and solid, hard flying, fighting and playing
attitude as we had there. Thanks for the great memories your website has
brought back. |

I just happened across your
website looking for pics of VFA-195 aircraft. As a
prior member of HS-12 on Midway and ships company on Independence, I am
amazed at the photos you have. Thanks for providing them to us all.
It sounds like you arrived in 136 about the time I was leaving HS-12 (Aug
88) and then leaving when I checked into ships company on Indy (Apr
92). I’m forwarding the URL to another HS-12 alumni that’s been searching
for photos from the era. Thanks for putting all the great pics on the net
for us to enjoy.

Dear Sir,
Great site. I was onboard CV-41 during 79-80 and remember the hard work
and mostly good memories. When we hit the "Cactus" I was in the foward
JP-5 pump room by myself surrounded by a lot of liquid. The collision was
just as it was described in the text. A firm rumble and the high pitched
scream of the 1-MC calling us to general quarters. We were so worn out
after our Persian Gulf commitments that we were very happy that we were
not going to relieve the USS Nimitz. The photo of the flight deck "Merry
Christmas" pose was memorable, I was the very bottom of the "T". Do you
know what happened to the freighter "Cactus", I was told that it was a
lumber ship that had to be towed to shallow water were it sank.
Very Respectfully,
Paul Jarvis (V-4 Division) |
