Hello,
My dad served on the
midway from 1959-'67. He was in helicopter squadron HC-2 (I
believe it was) He doesn't have a computer that he can use but if
he did I am sure he would share some stories. His health has been
in decline and he almost died over the summer '03 and has had a
pacemaker installed. He loved the NAVY and I am trying to get him
to attend the "opening ceremonies" of dedication for the ship on
June 5th. I don't know if he will go or not, I think it would be a
"home" coming for him but I'm not sure. Thanks for your site I
really like it. I think it has as much significance to me as it
does to him perhaps more so as the son of a sailor a wanted to
"grow up" to be like him and do the same thing as he was doing. I
was greatly interested and read all his magazines he kept around
the house then. I really liked the pictures of planes and
helicopters in action.
Thanks again,
Jimmy Speight |

Does anyone remember
the "Phantom Shitter" incident on one of the 1952 Med Cruises. I
need to know if it was the January or December cruise for a book
that I am writing.

She was a wonderful
boat. Like you, the rest of my commands could not compare to the
time I spent aboard USS Midway. I slept 4 ft below the flight deck
in a top rack in OE berthing. I swear I could sleep beside a train
track. Shane Stewart DS3 90-91 |
