My dad (Robert E.
Lowe) was among the first crew aboard, designated plank owner
during WW2. It was an exciting time for him and certainly had a
major part in shaping his life. I just wish I could hear all his
stories again. |

This website gives me
a lot of good memories of our port visits and the friends I made.
The Midway was a great ship and it had a great crew. |

I was stationed
onboard the USS Midway from Aug '88 until July '91, through the
explosions that knocked me on my butt and killed three friends on
June 20, 1990 and through the Persian Gulf War. Can't wait until I
rotate back to the 'States to see her again, and feel the source
of the Magic I still feel inside! |

Japan. VFA-151 and HSL-51. Good times. |

I have to say thanks
for such a great archive of the Midway. I was part of OS division
and worked as a Cryptologist aboard from 10/83 to 11/85. The best
memories. Thanks for keeping them alive. |

I

I'm on my last tour in
the Navy with Carl Vinson but I was attached to VA-115 From 1985
to 1989. I was TAD to ships company during EISRA, when they put
those stupid blisters on the hull, and with the line shack for the
1987-88 I.O. Earnest Will Cruise.
I love telling these younger kids, who'll never know the joys of a
hot day in the Philippines or the "real" Pattaya Beach, what a
real aircraft carrier is. Compared to the Magic, Carl Vinson is a
spoiled brat.
I think my favorite memory of Midway is Admiral Lyle Bull, our
battle group commander. I was fond of his sense of history...like
the night we sailed through the southern Islands of the
Philippines during WARPACEX 88 and we had the USS Enterprise
chasing us. The Admiral gave an impromptu history lesson that
night as we sat anchored in Suragao Straits, the same location
where a line of old Pearl Harbor battleships destroyed the last of
Imperial Japan's Naval forces in World war II.
Bull was one of our most brilliant modern commanders, He and
Captain Mixon made that ship's later years exciting and glorious.
When the Midway left Japan for the last time I was based out of
Atsugi. The emotions the Japanese people extended to her were the
same as if she'd been a member of their own fleet, they loved us
and we loved them. The day the Midway left was the day the real
Navy and the real WESTPAC died.
I was so happy that the old warrior didn't end up like the FDR and
the Coral Sea, chopped to pieces by uncaring hands. She still
looks wonderful.
She was the finest warship in the fleet, the best carrier in the
West Pac and the baddest, meanest mother (beeeep) in the world. No
wonder the Russians wasted so much paper writing messages about
her, they were terrified of her!
That's why I can wear my leather Midway jacket with pride, smirk
at these Carl Vinson people and tell them what whimps they really
are.

The recent photos put
into your site are great. They really bring back memories of when
I was in GM Division from Oct 1958 to Feb 1961. One of those
memories was having to swab up all the water left in one of our
magazines on the 5th deck after the fire in the "after HEAF pump
room" while the Midway was tied up at Subic Bay. Those of us who
were down there probably sweat as much as we swabbed up. The
ship's damage control people did a fine job with some help from
the Base Fire Department to prevent that fire from spreading.
There had even been talk of putting out to sea "just in case." I'm
looking forward to going aboard as soon as I can and hope some
roaming about the ship will be permitted. I'm curious just how
much the interior may have changed since I was aboard. |
