My dad was aboard Midway from 84-86 as part of VA-93. I caught your A-7's photo on the CVW-5 page and thought I could help. The two plane element on the left is from VA-93 (striped rudders, shark mouth intake, and the tail icons from the squadron logo). The right element is harder to tell. It looks like they're probably from VA-56, also aboard Midway at the same time. VA-56 carried 400-series numbers, standard intake warnings, and the squadron marking featured a boomerang. I can't see the tail clearly enough to be sure, but one looks to have the boomerang and the other appears to have the NF of CVW-5. Maybe the print shows it clearer than the scan.

Still exploring the site, but it looks great so far.

R-Div 81-83..Midway was a lot of work but it also was a lot of great liberty ports too! Was at decomm at North Island...looking forward to returning to San Diego one day for a visit to the Midway. BTW, does anyone recall what was the real reason the Midway reloaded all it's ordinance at Sasebo right after it was off loaded due to a upcoming EISRA back in Yoko...after we reloaded we hightailed it toward Korea (I think) looking like we were going to war... this was Dec 81 or 82. After steaming a ways whatever the emergency was, it was over, so instead of returning to Sasebo we off loaded all ordinance at sea onto an Ammo ship and made it back to Yoko on the 23rd... in time for Christmas. Never heard what was "going down" at that time for us to do all that. Anyone got any info on that situation?

I will never forget this grand lady who protected us and was our home. I have many fond memories of my cruises with her. I served with CAG 5 VA - 56, we caught her after her overhaul, with a new flight deck and a refit. We got her ready for Westpac across the pond to the Yankee Station. It was a good cruise with excellent people. There will always be a warm spot in my heart for this ship and my shipmates.

I was an ABH "V-1 Dawg" from 1981-1984. Known as "The Snake", I served onboard the USS Midway starting out and staying on the flight deck as a Blue Shirt working my way through Tractor Driver to Fly 1 Director. Going from a simple Airman to ABH3 status. I consider that time in my life to be my Greatest Years. I met some great friends and made a lot more family members. I consider most all of the "V-1 Dawgs" my personal family. We possibly may have been the closest knit group of Rebels ever assembled. The "Dawgs" never failed. I know those days are long gone, but boy how I still long for their return.

On the Midway in 1980-82 (CSM/Sigs Div) & Weapons Dept (FOX Div. Div O). I had just assumed the watch as Officer of the Deck when the Enterprise's F-14's landed on board-very exciting! I look back at my time on the Midway with a great sense of pride!

Served from Dec '81 to Aug '84, Weapons Department.
In response to Scott Smith 1-4-03:
He is correct that two Tomcats did land aboard Midway, but it was not due to fog. We were having war games and there was some confusion for the pilots. They were part of the opposing force. In addition, although they were watched by Mar-Det, this was only after they were tagged by us. The pilots were good sports about it though, they did do a flyby the next morning.

Served on board from 12/78 to 12/81. Was the only DPSN in Deck 2. Was on board when Iran took over the American Embassy and when we hit and sank an unlit tanker in the middle of the night. This also killed two of our shipmates. I was young and learned a lot from Midway Magic.
