Hi, I am trying to locate an individual who was on the Midway during April/May of 1975. He helped a family that I am very close with and they have been trying to locate him for years to thank him for his unbelievable kindness while aboard the Midway. He has sent pictures and letters signed "Midway Bob" from years ago, however, we aren't sure of his full name or contact info. His name is either Bob (Robert) Calderwood (or Dalderwood) as we can best tell from the pictures he sent. He is the man holding the cargo net on the right side of this page from your website:

Any help that you could provide with regards to name or contact info for "Midway Bob" would be truly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Hey V-2 Division, just looking to get in contact with some old buddies aboard in 89. I worked both below decks and topside. I was topside when I got injured and had to retire from the Navy.

I visited USS MIDWAY with a USAF cross-training detachment in June 1963. I received a lasting memorable impression of a fine ship and outstanding crew. At that time, USS MIDWAY had just recently succeeded in achieving an unprecedented history-making achievement: the "hands-off" electronically controlled landing of an F-4 Phantom fighter jet on the deck of a moving A/C carrier. This major technical advance helped to land humans on the Moon in 1969.

In Feb. 84, I flew out from Muscat, Oman, to visit and convey some information from the Oman DAO while I was the Communications Officer at the U.S. Embassy, Oman. At the briefing by R/Adm Tom Brown he ask us to look into the faces of the crew as we took our tours. He said we will see expressions of high morale and no sad looking crew. He was right , the ship was not only highly efficient but the crew were cheerful to my eyes. It was a great day and the bombing practice off the fan tail, launches and recoveries, and especially the great classified tour Lt. Comd. Cole gave me of the ships Comms facilities was a highlight of my two year tour in country. Capt. Kober and his staff could not have been more gracious. Well done, Midway! It sure made this old civilian very proud of our Navy and country.

Great website.....

But, your Marine Corps step-brothers, VMAQ-2 (EA-6's), were onboard too. I was one of them. From May '75 to Dec. '75 and Jan. '78 to June '78.

Funny side-note; When I returned to the Midway in January of ''78, some of the same guys from my '75 stint in the avionics AIMD shop were still there. I asked them them if they were on a tour of duty or serving a sentence!

Thanks to all of the "squids" who made this "jarhead" feel at home while onboard. I feel privileged to have served on her.

I was on board the USS Midway from Oct 89-decommission with VA-185 Knighthawks, working as a Powerplant troubleshooter and night check Powerplant Supervisor. It was the best squadron that I ever served with onboard the best ship that I went on cruise with.

Served during the 1971 cruise as a flight deck troubleshooter (AME) with VF-161 "Chargers" - After previous cruise on the Coral Sea, the Midway seemed like the Ritz! Thank goodness the Midway is being preserved - the photos of the Coral Sea being "slaughtered" in India were pretty sad. I would be honored to hear from anyone who served on Midway, or in VF-161.

I don't have a clue as to what homepage URL means nor what is meant by location. Someone will tell me. I saw all three of the Midway class during WW2 if my memory serves me (getting old) in Norfolk area. We thought it was a huge ship and it was for then. At that time I was on a APA (attack transport) anyone recall these? Then later on a CVE, it was like a matchstick. We hit a hurricane in 51 and later on after I had retired I checked a website and found it had been through a hurricane back in the 40's. We all thought it was "curtains" but the old bucket of bolts made it...Great sites. Sumner Thompson

My dad was on the USS Midway during World War II...not exactly sure of the dates he was on board...I know he was drafted in August of 1944 and served until 1946. His name was Hubert Bernard Townsend and he was from Ypsilanti, Michigan. (Most people called him Bernard) He talked so much about his time on the Midway. He died of a brain tumor in 1992...I was just wondering if there are any of his shipmates out there who might remember him.

Served in V-1 Div. while the ship was under the command of Capt R.D. Mixon. I plan on being there on 06/09/04 and want to visit the finest carrier in the fleet. Cdr Buzz Radigan was the Air Boss, Cdr Mike Nordeen, was the XO and I was in charge of the most famous sailboat in Midway history, at least that was what the XO said when they finally pulled in to Cubi Pt.

I'm looking for Ralph L. Bentley, or any relatives. He served as an S-3 under N.W. Danielson and M. Omen on the Midway in the 60's. His nickname was "Red" and he would be in his 70's or so about now. He's my dad, and he may not know it. My mother just passed last year, and I've been looking for him. Thanks!
