Aboard as ship's company July 1970 to
September 1973. Achieved CS-5 rank. Worked ship's bakery, spud
locker, main galley. Would like to hear from anyone else in the
Commissary during those years, or anyone who worked for me as a
mess cook during those times. |

I'm doing a book about the aircrafts
that operated aboard USS Midway. Any contribution would be very
much appreciated. Especially Pictures and Sea stories are very
welcome ! You can follow the progress on my website in the Project
Midway section, and you can sign up to the Forum on my website. In
the Midway section on my website you'll find a lot of drawings of
Midways aircrafts, Deployment posters and detailed info about each
deployment USS Midway have ever done.
I have an example of what the book will look like, which i would
be more than happy to e-mail you, so you can see what the book
will look like once it is finished.
I'm afraid that I can't offer you any money for your
contributions. I haven't undertaken this project hoping that it'll
make me any money. I rather hope that I'll be able to document the
story of the air wings that have operated from USS Midway!
Hope you'll help me ! |

Subject : USS Midway in Pusan, Korea
1980
In the summer of 1980, I was a young Sergeant in the Marine Corps
stationed in Iwakuni, Japan with VMFP-3. We would deploy our
RF-4Bs to the USS Midway every time she would sail. I went on a
cruise with her and we ported in Pusan, Korea on June 18, 1980.
Korea was under martial law. But the big news was the porting of
the USS Midway. Major dredging had taken place in the harbor and
this was the first time a US carrier had ever been able to pull
into dock. We were met with a fanfare at the docking; Miss Korea
was present to welcome the USS Midway into port.
I was a photo processing technician for the photo reconnaissance
RF-4Bs; I worked in the Midway's photo lab while deployed at sea.
While I pulled liberty in port I walked to the top of the
mountains that surrounded Pusan harbor and took pictures of the
USS Midway in port. This is what makes my photos so unique: it was
very rainy and overcast the weekend we came into port. The Navy
sent up helicopters to take photos but they did not get photos
through the haze (I knew this after the fact because I was working
in the photo lab). I took my 35mm Yashica with a telephoto lens
and shot still shots from the mountains through the haze.
I may have the only existing photos of the USS Midway in the Pusan
harbor on June 20, 1980.

I enjoyed my time on the ship and had my share of mishaps.
Although my time only lasted for a short while, I loved her. |

I served on the USS Midway twice. The
first time was from 1984 to 1988 in Weapons Department my shop was
on the Aft Mess Decks. The second time I was in the Air Wing with
VA-185. I really enjoyed my tours on this ship. Most people did
not know what the Magic was all about. When they sent her back
home the Magic that was there left with her and will never be
replaced. I will never forget my times on the USS Midway and I am
sure that any sailor that rode her will never forget. |
