Subject : Fw: Information on Jim Messner, CVA-41 1962-1966

Troy, I sent you this message because I am not quite sure exactly what to do with it and thought some of his old ship mates might be interested in the services.

Jim Messner was aboard the Midway for the 63-64 cruise and the 65 cruise. He worked the flight deck as either a yellow or blue shirt (Pretty much the same time as myself (VA25) and Trigger (Cat crew) were aboard). I ran across him in 1987 working for Delta Air. Jim also used to crew for one of the unlimited air racers called the "Rare Bear."

Thanks,

Bob Sullivan

My Dad,  Marvin Keesling, was aboard the ship from Sept 1948 to June 1952. I have learned so much from your site, I love it. I look at the old pictures from Dad's time period and I can imagine him walking around the areas shown. We plan, me and him to go to San Diego this summer. He is looking so forward to this. I am too. What a wonderful time to spend alone with Dad.....Thank you for this site.

Midway was my first ship and the best part of being in the Navy! Kawasaki District, Ropongi at night, Olongapo City with Red Horse and balut, Kowloon for seafood, Kings Cross in Syndey, Snake shows in Bangkok, and Mixon's Fixins when in home port. What a life!
So glad that all the rehab work we did on the ship didn't go to waste since she is now a floating museum. I told Capt. Mixon that she would some day belong to the Smithsonian while painting one of the firestations back in 1986! And now look!

I served aboard Ma Midway from 1976 to 1978 in V-2 Division, the Catapults.
Talk about a good time. On top and up front where all the action is. And I had the distinct pleasure of working for and with some of the best people in the Navy. Maybe the world ... at least at that time anyway. Those boys knew how to work hard and the best part was that they could play harder. Talk about memories. I'd like to thank my shipmates for taking this landlocked Pennsylvania newbie under their wing and protecting his butt long enough to teach me to survive on my own, as well as how to do my job well and instill in me some super working habits. As well as how to hoot with the owls and still soar with the eagles. We sure did alot of that eh! (:-o Nothing like being on a permanent Westpac with Ma Midway.
Cruisin' & Boozin'. And a salute to the best Cat Crew in the Navy. Danny Keswater (KesH2O), Craig Thiede, Ross Johnson, Tinker Faulkner, Rich Walker, Joe Wills, Brad Karsmiski, Mike Stinski, Craig Bishop, Kevin Frerk, Sonny Burroughs, Tony Phillips, Larry Ferguson, Dave Cash, Macintyre, Steve Caple, Ed Wolfe, Stan Edwards, Scotty Childs, Donaldson, Boucher, Ed Roach, Campana, Bushby, Tito Vargas, Bob Barbini, Jim Mitchell, George Frisbee, Gerald Sosnowski, Chief Lunsford, Chief McCord, Bos'n Pinion (ABMA Living Legend) and all the rest.
You guys were a class act. God Bless!
