I am BMC Richard L. Williams USN, Retired. I served on the Midway for about a year in 1983-1984. I left the ship early due to a serious illness. I was CPO in charge of second division, and leading chief of the deck department. I served on several ships while I was on active duty, from as small as the USS Peacock MSC-198 which was 135 feet long with a crew of 35 all the way up to the Midway which had a crew of over 5,000. The best thing I remember was the CPO mess. It was probably the best in the navy. We ate even better than the officers. Anyone who remembers me please drop me a line.

I boarded Midway in August 1973 and soon after we were passing under the Golden Gate to be the only carrier homeported overseas. I was sure green to everything, but I had wonderful shipmates that got me through. I was an OS and worked in CIC. I left in 1975 by chance and went to the USS Long Beach. What a difference. I missed the Midway as soon as I left. What a fine ship. I regret leaving yet to this day, Midway was MAGIC and I have missed it ever since!

As far as I can find, V-2 Division Reunion is the only active Midway reunion at this time. Our 5th will be next May in Beaumont, Texas. This reunion is open to anyone who served on the Midway. We are a bunch of old sailors who were on the Midway in the 50s and early 60s. It is an informal reunion with many sea stories and good food. Come on to Beaumont and meet new and old shipmates and make new friends. If any one is interested in attending please contact me Jerry Boysel at 918 838 2017 or jerboysel@aol.com. for more information. Let us keep the spirit of the crew alive.

I was able to go aboard the USS MIDWAY on August 9th 2005. This was only 1.5 years after it opened. I have yet to be able to go back again. When I am able to go back I hope to be able to see all the changes that has occurred on it. I had the most fun I had ever had while on it.
