The
majority of CVW-5
fixed-wing aircraft were flown off to NAS Cubi Point on 20 APR & ten USAF 40th Aerospace Rescue & Recovery Squadron H-53's were embarked.
Beginning on 29 APR, the H-53's flew in excess of 40 sorties, evacuating
refugees from Saigon. Midway's HC-1 Det 2 Sea Kings transported the
evacuees to other ships. Additionally, three VMCJ-1 Det 101 EA-6As & one
RF-4B were offloaded at NAS Cubi Point. The three EA-6As crossdecked to
USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) to provide ECM coverage during the
evacuation of Saigon. Two RF-4Bs remained aboard
Midway,
but did not fly over South
Vietnam. All aircraft returned aboard
Midway on 15 MAY
1975.
* HML-367 (09 UH-1E &
12 CH-46D helicopters) was only aboard from 04 APR 1975 ~ 07 APR 1975
while MIDWAY transported them from their home base in Okinawa to the
Subic operating area off the Philippines. The squadron left
Midway
for the carrier USS
Hancock (CVA-19).

CH-53C helicopters) was only aboard from 20 APR 1975 ~ 02 MAY 1975 &
conducted evacuations from Saigon.
**** 40th ARRS (Aerospace Rescue & Recovery
Squadron) (02 HH-53C helicopters) was only aboard from 20 APR 1975 ~ 02
MAY 1975 & conducted evacuations from Saigon.
