VMFP-3 Det B was aboard from 10 MAR – 25 APR & again from 01-08 MAY 1983.
** During USS MIDWAY’s fall 1982 deployment to NORPAC, the Sea of Japan
and South China Sea, the resident EA-6B Prowler squadron, VAQ-136
Gauntlets, received tasking from the Joint Chiefs of Staff to move all
aircraft, assets and personnel to USS AMERICA (CV-66), which had deployed
from Norfolk without a Prowler squadron assigned to her air wing CVW-1.
VAQ-136 executed an unprecedented 8,300-mile cross deck deployment from
NAF Atsugi, Japan to the meet the AMERICA as she operated in the Arabian
Sea. Leaving Japan on 30 JAN 1983, the four EA-6Bs trapped aboard the
AMERICA on 06 FEB 1983. The aircraft remained onboard until 21 APR 1983
with the rest of the squadron departing AMERICA two days later; all
returned to Atsugi on 28 APR 1983. During their three months with Carrier
Air Wing One, VAQ-136 operated with several NATO forces and participated
in two BEACON FLASH exercises. While VAQ-136 was away, VMAQ-2 Det Y3
temporarily replaced them aboard USS MIDWAY and participated in TEAM
SPIRIT 83-1 in the Sea of Japan. However, VMAQ-2 Det Y3 departed the ship
without participating in the following FLEETEX 83-1 & READEX 83 exercises.
