Steve Ward Collection in the USS Midway Photo Gallery section - A new gallery of 18 photos. Steve Ward is a Docent at the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum. He is also the owner/operator of Midway Docents, a site which has photographs of Midway Docents & Safety Personnel serving aboard Midway / SDACM. It is a good insider's view of Midway and the work in progress to make her more accessible. All photos in this gallery were taken by Steve Ward and used with permission from his web site at: Midway Docents.

R. Clinton Griffin Collection in the USS Midway Photo Gallery section - A new gallery of 112 photos. Clint Griffin volunteers as the official photographer for the USS Midway / San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum. Clint has been photographing Midway's restoration & conversion to a museum since January 10, 2004 when she was brought across San Diego Bay from North Island to the Navy pier. As the volunteer photographer onboard Midway, he has been allowed access to all areas of the ship, photographing them for the museum's archives. Several of the galleries here show areas of the ship which have been restored, but are not yet open to the public. Of special note are the photos of the restored Fo'c'scle & Medical Department spaces. Thanks to Clint, this is the first public viewing of these newly restored areas.

A personal note about the R. Clinton Griffin Collection: The 112 photos in this new collection are just a beginning. I will be receiving over 26 cd's of photos, with more to come as Clint continues his photo documentation of the Midway / SDACM.

Midway's Hangar - The Original Collection in the USS Midway Photo Gallery section - A new gallery of 73 photos. The photos in this gallery are used with permission from Dave Hanson, who created the original web site for the Midway Aircraft Restoration Hangar. When Dave discontinued Midway's Hangar, John Njaa created Midway's Aircraft Home as a way to keep us all updated on the status of aircraft being restored. Dave Hanson has kindly allowed me to use the photos from Midway's Hangar, both to preserve them and also to give some much needed recognition to the outstanding volunteers working to restore these aircraft. The photos in this gallery are from the Restoration Hangar's earlier days, showing the original aircraft and the condition in which they arrived.

American Wings Air Museum - On September 26, 2004 I made my third visit to this museum. This time I was armed with my digital camera, and several new lenses and filters. I was not happy with the quality of the pictures from my previous visits and had decided to re-photograph the museum. Not only did the new pictures come out much better, I was also treated to the rare sight of watching the S2F-1 Tracker undergoing a test flight. A few of the new pictures were taken with my old 35mm camera because the telephoto lens is still best for long distance shots. With the digital camera, I used a combination of a normal lens, zoom lens, wide-angle lens and a fish-eye lens, along with polarizing and neutral density filters. The 357 new photos I took have been added to the following galleries:

A Personal Note:

I've been holding off on updates recently because my server space had been filled almost to capacity. I've been going through the site and making some changes to recover space for more material. One of the major changes I've had to do was reducing the size of most of the photos in the galleries. With thousands of photos, this has been no small chore. However, all this work has paid off and I've freed up over 25% of the used space for new material.

Tonight I am uploading the last of the resized photos and the space recovered will allow me to finish uploading photos from my June trip to San Diego. I still have three more USS Midway galleries to upload, with a couple hundred photos showing Midway's flight deck, hangar deck, and views of the ship from pier side. I also have my San Diego Aerospace Museum visit, 2004 American Wings Air Museum visit and 2004 Red Wing Air Show currently in work, along with additional material for the USS Midway section. To top it off, day after tomorrow is the 2004 Wings of the North air show in Eden Prairie and if it's like last year, I'll have a few hundred photos for the site before it's over.

I did take a brief break away from Midway material to upload photos from my visit to the Minnesota ANG Museum last weekend. It's way off the Midway subject, but it was my first chance to shoot aircraft with my new digital camera. It was also the first outing this season in Minnesota when it didn't rain. The sky was still gray, but it was over 80 degrees and the photos turned out pretty good. Hopefully, this weekend's air show will be blue skies like last year. I've found it's very difficult to take photos while trying to hold an umbrella over the camera.

Mainly, I would like to reassure everyone that I am not out of material for the site and much more is coming soon!
