Closure Announcement in Stars & Stripes Newspaper
London Central High School was
part of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools Europe (DoDDS-E). It
was first established in 1951 at Bushey Park, adjoining Hampton Court
Palace. In 1962 the school moved to Bushey Hall, about 16 miles Northwest
of London. In 1971, the school was relocated to its final location at
the USAF Air Station in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, approximately 25
miles west of London.
London Central High School was a typical American High School with American
and Canadian students, which happened to be located in England. Most of the
students were dependents of U.S. military personnel stationed in England,
although some of the students came from throughout Europe, Africa, Asia,
South America, or Saudi Arabia. LCHS was also open to local area U.S.
citizens on a fee-paying basis.
With two residence halls on site, students in Grades 9-12 were in residence
7 days a week. Normal dormitory population was about 70 ~ 90 students. In
addition to large rooms, there were study lounges, social rooms, kitchens,
and laundry facilities. A Teen Center, bowling alley, movie theater, and
dining hall on campus provided after-school entertainment and meals.
Approximately 230 day students in grades 7-12 traveled by bus to the school.
This made London Central a unique day and boarding school with a total
population of approximately 300+ students.
London Central High School was a fully accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools. Small classes and highly educated and
experienced teachers contributed to an excellent record of student
performance. A rigorous academic program, including numerous Advanced
Placement courses and an array of electives, helped prepare students for
academic achievement and success in their post-secondary lives.
More than 78% of LCHS graduates continued their education at some form of
post-secondary institution. LCHS students scored above the national norms
on PSAT and SAT examinations, as well as standardized achievement tests.
LCHS annually had a number of commendations in the National Merit
Scholarships Competitions.
London Central graduates have attended the service academies as well as
the best colleges, universities, and technical schools in the United
States.
