Well, I'm back from a wonderful eleven-day trip to San Diego. I had a great time attending the opening week of the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum - USS Midway. I spent my first morning touring the Midway's Aircraft Restoration Hangar at NAS North Island with Robert Anderson and then headed over to the ship. As soon as I arrived, Bill Purcell put me right to work by helping to secure off-limits areas of the ship in preparation for the grand opening. In fact, Bill put me to work for the whole week I was there!
I had originally planned on volunteering for Sunday the 6th, but after restructuring my plans, I ended up working aboard the ship from Saturday afternoon through Thursday night. It was a great week and I was privileged to meet a lot of wonderful people: Bill Purcell, Buzz Nau, Gene Morrow, Chuck Cavanaugh, Ramón Purcell, Robert Anderson, Bob Hartman, Bill Hayes, Vic Vydra, Mac McLaughlin, Pete Clayton, Karl Zingheim, and many others. Most of these people I had only met through emails and am happy to have finally met them in person.
While in California, I took hundreds of photos aboard Midway, at the Aerospace Museum, and around San Diego. I have started scanning them and should begin uploading them within a few days, along with many Bill Purcell has already sent to me. While working aboard the ship, I had access to many areas that are not part of the museum tour. I took photos of everything I could and judging from the photos, most everything came out great. I will start uploading these photos to the site in a day or so and I hope they give a good impression of Midway's opening week.

No update this time, but I just wanted to add a note about why the updates have been so few lately. Mainly it's because I'm in a new (old?) job... the same job I had two years ago and left for another. It's very stressful and mentally exhausting at times. To top it off, my second hard drive decided to corrupt itself and I spent Friday, Sunday, and part of today recovering files and reformatting it.
I took a break from that on Saturday to attend a very soggy air show (see the May 22nd update below). It was a steady drizzle all day long and not a single plane got off the ground. The only thing that kept it from being a complete waste of time was the appearance of a beautifully restored MiG-17. This is the same aircraft that did a very quick flypast during last year's Wings of the North Air Expo, but never landed. This time it was on the ramp and I burned up about six rolls of film on it. There were also two B-25's, two Texans, two L-29's, one L-39, and a whole gaggle of L-2's through L-5's scattered around. The American Wings Air Museum was also open and I took some more shots of their OV-1 Mohawks, TA-7C Corsair II, and S2F-1 Tracker.
Now that I have the computer gremlins banished to the basement again, I'll start scanning these new photos and getting them online. Next weekend is the Minnesota Wing of the CAF's Wings of Freedom air show and it's supposed to be packed with all kinds of great planes. The next weekend will be even better... 10 and a wake up to San Diego!
P.S. Hey Buzz... this time I'll tell you where I found that store selling San Miguel's back in January! I'm also pretty sure I can whip up some of those Korean ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches you're so addicted to. All we'd be missing then would be a case of Oscar's!

Midway. I took 15 rolls of film that day, but have only had two rolls

Until I get back, there will not be any site updates, although I will have email access. Please check back next week to see what happened over the weekend.
One more note for everyone signing the guest book & sending me emails: Thank you for taking the time to leave your messages. I love hearing your stories and recollections and also for being able to share them with everyone through this site. As for all the praise, Thank You very much! This started out as a small hobby to show the history of this great ship and suddenly turned into a huge project. I have spent countless hours conducting research and collecting all this material. It has taken several years to compile everything and it seems to have come together very well, judging from everyone's comments. Guys, this site is for you... For all the Midway vets especially, but also for anyone who has ever served, or will serve in the United States Navy. My apologies to the Black Shoes, but..... FLY NAVY!!!
