March 30, 2005 in the USS Midway Photo Gallery section - I received an email today from Bernie's friend informing me of his passing on Monday, March 28, 2005. Through several emails and his photos, I became friends with Bernie and am greatly saddened at his passing. The Bernie Stadiem Collection gallery is now my memorial to this Midway Sailor and it is my hope that Bernie lives on in our memories through these photographs and slides.

Today's update completes all the digital photos of USS Midway I took during my recent trip to San Diego. I still have eight rolls of 35mm film to be developed, although not all of those photos will be of Midway. With the digital photos completed, My March 2005 USS Midway / SDACM Trip gallery now has 1,377 photos & souvenir items in 29 sub-galleries. I will add the 35mm film photos as soon as they are developed.
In addition to these photos, I will also be adding a gallery of San Diego city photos, along with the nine photo cd's I received from Clint Griffin when I met him in San Diego.

Spaces include: LOX Plant, Mach 1's Top Gun room, Machine & Metal Shops, Ordnance Control, ship's stores, SINS Room, etc.
I also enhanced & lightened 23 Fo'c'scle photos, 17 Jet Shop photos & 16 Circle of Friends Ceremony & Dance photos because the originals were very dark. These changes have brought out more details in the photos.

Personal Note: I have just returned from my third trip to San Diego since January 2004. During this trip, I was able to tour Midway / SDACM & saw several new exhibits & aircraft. I was also able to revisit the USS Midway Aircraft Restoration Hangar, which is located at NAS North Island. I met up with many old friends & was finally able to meet several new ones. I was also finally able to meet Clint Griffin, who gave me nine new cd's for his photo collection on this site.
I was armed with both my old 35 mm camera, as well as my newer digital camera. I took eight rolls of film with the 35 mm & over 1,600 photos with the digital camera. Although I will not use all the photos on this site, I do plan on using many & they will show how Midway looks as a museum today. Some of the highlights in the new gallery will be: Fo'c'scle, Medical, Midway University, Ordnance Control, Junior Officer's Bunkroom, and the Circle of Friends donor ceremony. I also have new photos of the restoration work being performed on the RA-5C Vigilante, A-4F Skyhawk, SBD-1 Dauntless, F/A-18A Hornet, as well as the other previously restored aircraft. A new aspect for this trip was several harbor excursions, where I took many photos of Midway from a whole new perspective.
I am currently in-work on getting these photos online & expect to have the first photos available for viewing very soon. Please be patient & check back in the next couple of days for the new photos.

0030 hours: Just a small update today before I hop in a cab to the airport at 0400. One plane change in Chicago & a couple of hours later, I'm back aboard Midway :)
Both of my cameras (digital & 35 mm) are packed, along with an extra bag to carry back Midway Jet Shop souvenirs. As a reminder, I will be offline with very limited email access from today until Thursday, March 9th. Arrangements have been made for another tour of Midway's Aircraft Restoration Hangar, where I will have access to all aircraft, including the F9F-5 Panther, F/A-18A Hornet, A-4F Skyhawk, RA-5C Vigilante, SBD-1 Dauntless & all the other projects in work. I will also finally meet Clint Griffin in person (Clint is the official volunteer photographer for the SDACM). Clint will be giving me no less than eight cd's full of new photos for his galleries on this site & they will be online soon after my return home.

Air-to-Air Victories in Vietnam in the USS Midway Photo Gallery section - added a new graphic showing the eight confirmed MiG kills made by aircraft flying from Midway during the Vietnam War. On February 17th, I had reported that there were now nine MiG kills made by Midway aircraft. After further research and discussion with experts, I have modified all documentation on this site to show the record as eight confirmed and one probable. When I receive positive confirmation of this possible ninth MiG kill, I will change all documentation to show it as confirmed. What does this mean? It simply means that I got a little excited by discovering a previously unknown MiG kill. It does change Midway's history simply by the fact that it is a probable kill and is merely waiting for positive confirmation. ANOTHER TRIP TO SAN DIEGO HAS JUST BEEN APPROVED & CONFIRMED! I will be taking another trip to San Diego from Thursday, March 3rd through Tuesday, March 8th. The main reason for this trip, of course, is to visit USS Midway / SDACM once more. There is an SDACM Circle of Friends awards ceremony scheduled for Saturday, March 5th & I am also in-work on arranging another tour of the Midway Aircraft Restoration Hangar. It should be a great trip (although not as many days as I would like) & I should return with some great photos.

February 17, 2005 in the USS Midway Photo Gallery section - added recently declassified information I discovered about the first MiG kills of the Vietnam war, which were accomplished by VF-21 aircraft flying from Midway on June 17, 1965.
Air-to-Air Victories in Vietnam in the USS Midway Photo Gallery section - added eight new photos & three stories, including an article about the first MiG kills of the Vietnam war. This article is special because it possibly changes the history of the June 17, 1965 double MiG-17 kills. As it turns out, there may have been three MiG-17's shot down that day, instead of the two listed in all previous accounts. CDR L. Page & LT J. C. Smith, Jr. shot down the first MiG of the Vietnam war. LT J. E. Batson & LCDR R. B. Doremus shot down another MiG during the same engagement. Recently declassified documentation of this action now shows LT Batson & LCDR Doremus being credited with an additional MiG, resulting from debris from their first kill being ingested by that MiG's wingman. Until I receive positive confirmation of this kill being credited, I will only list it as a probable. Memorabilia - Naval Aviation News Articles in the USS Midway section - added 24 new articles in the 1990's section. This completes a project which has taken almost a year of reading through every issue of Naval Aviation News published from 1943 ~ 1993. This involved browsing through 533 Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) files & resulted in finding a total of 210 articles. Bob Dorais from USS Coral Sea.net was a big help in the beginning & we kept an eye out for Midway & Coral Sea articles for each other. I would like to express my thanks to Bob & also recommend USS Coral Sea.net as a must-see link to visit, as it's an outstanding tribute to one of Midway's sister ships.- added five new articles from Naval Aviation News.
